Biography
On June 6, 1887, Steven Johnson, age 37, was lynched in Blocton, 30 miles away from Birmingham by a mob of over a 100 white men. Johnson was accused of attempted assault on Mrs. Crawford. He chased her around her yard as well as went into her house. She was able to get away, however injured and cried for help. Johnston was identified by Mrs. Crawford and he was immediately taken to the woods. He was lynched and shot without a second of prayer or even a confession. Johnston was left out in the woods overnight. The white men were not going to bury him and the black community were too afraid to retrieve his body.
