MOB LYNCHED FOUR NEGROES. Troops Sent from Montgomery to Wetumpka, But Arrived Too Late. Last Tuesday night Wm. Carden, wife and brother-in-law were murdered, robbed and burned at their home, about seven miles north of Wetumpka. Four negroes were arrested suspected of having committed the crime, and were lodged in jail at Wetumpka. Thursday night a large mob from the country assembled and battered down the doors of the jail, broke open the steel cages and took the men out to the scene of the crime. There were about 1,100 men assembled, and after a confession of guilt by two of the negroes and a statement that im- plicated the other two, the infuriated mob took the negroes to a neighboring tree and swung them to a limb. The four were Sol Jackson, Lewis Speir, Jesse Thompson and Camp Reese. Troops were sent from Montgomery but did not arrive in time to prevent the lynching.
