Frank Saffold
Biography
On September 4, 1893, a thirteen year old black male, now identified as Frank Saffold, survived an attempted lynching by two different mobs composed of angry white citizens. Although he survived being lynched, he is a victim in many ways. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison on December 23, 1893 by the Circuit Court of Bibb County, Alabama for a crime he did not commit. It was in “The Walls” that Frank Saffold died of tuberculosis. Frank Saffold was a young, black male, who survived a near-lynching on September 5, 1893, only to die in prison from tuberculosis most likely contracted from laboring in a coal mine as part of the Alabama lease convict program after his conviction for the assault of Mrs. Sarah Scott.
