Adv. NEGROES Suspected Of Complicity In Killing Of Farmer Taken From Alabama Jail By Mob And Presumably Lynched Bodies Not Found By Officers Montgomery, Ala., Jan. 4.-Ed and Will Smith, negroes, arrested last Thursday charged with implication in the assassination of R. A. Stillwell, an Elmore county farmer, were taken from the jail at Wetumpka, Ala., early today and lynched by a mob of fifteen or twenty men. About 1:30 o'clock this morning a mob of men, masked and armed. entered the jail. over-powered Sheriff Jackson, bound him to a chair and forced a negro trusty to unlock the cells of the two negroes. With the prisoners carefully bound. the men left, going in the direction of Elmore station. Details are meager as to what .. occurred after their departure. The bodles have not yet been found. Late last night Governor O'Neal ordered Adjutant General Scully to mobilize the Alabama militia and at 3 o'clock they left here in automobiles for the scene of the lynching. The militia today are endeavoring to round up some of the participants in the party. Wetumpka is fourteen miles from Montgomery in Elmore county. Stillwell was assassinated early Thursday morning while guarding his barn against negro thieves He was shot in the back of the head Bloodhounds were put on the trail and the scent led directly to the cabins of the Smith negroes They were arrested and placed in jail at Wetumpka.
