Harvey King Connor, former deputy sheriff of Elmore County, was acquitted Wednesday of the charge of violating the civil rights of Negro James Earl Motley, who died of head wounds last Nov. 20. Witnesses testified Connor beat Motley over the head with a "blackjack or slapjack." The defense said Motley incurred the wounds when he fell off his bunk in Elmore County jail.
