Double Probe of Negro of Negro Jail Death. Wetumpka, Ala. - A coroner's inquiry into the death of a Negro at the Elmore County jail was held behind closed doors today. County Coroner Joseph R. Benson called the early morning hearing into the death Sunday if James Earl Motley, 23, which is under FBI investigation. Motley's stepfather, William Varner, has charged "My son was beaten to death." Benson declined to say when the findings would be made public. He insisted an autopsy had not been completed, although Varner said one already had been performed when he viewed the body at a funeral home Sunday.
