Alex Hill was hung at 12:10 pm for murdering Mrs. Hubbard. He showed no fear and little emotion. Sheriff Vance walked him up. Parsons Westly and Witherspoon, two colored ministers, said prayers and read from the Bible. Sheriff Vance let Alex say his last words and he talked for a few minutes. He stated that he was going to heaven and had no ill-feeling towards anyone. Last words were, “I am going home to die no more.” The hanging was done in the jail so not many could see, but people tried. The crime happened on Monday June 5, 1899. Will and Alex Hill went to the Hubbard’s house at 10 am. His wife answered the door and told them Mr. Hubbard was sick. He went to the door and Alex shot a shotgun at him, hitting Mr. Hubbard’s arm and Mrs. Hubbard. People learned of what happened around 4 pm. A posse captured Will the next day and took him to the swamps. They riddled Him with bullets. They thought Mr. Hubbard was gone and they could rob the house and burn it. Sheriff Robert Vance and the governor had a $400 reward from returning Alex Hill. The citizens offered $100. A foreman and constable captured Alex in Walker County and took him to jail. Sherriff Vance asked the Governor for a speedy trail and Judge Moore started the case.
