Conner Freed By Jurors in Motley Case MONTGOMERY, Ala., April 12-Harvey King Conner, former Deputy Sheriff accused of violating the civil rights of a Negro later found dead in his jail cell, was freed of the Federal charge today. A U.S. District Court jury of 11 white men and one Negro acquitted the 57-year-old Conner after two days of testimony on charges stemming from the death of James Earl Motley, 27, in November. Conner was alleged to have beaten Motley with a slap- jack, a hand weapon, during an arrest Nov. 20, 1966, on an Elmore County highway. He said Motley was drunk and resisted arrest.
