On June 21 (Saturday), 1919 Sheriff R. H. Wood put four white men in jail for the lynching of Jim McMillan. They made him stand on a stump and shot him to death. The coroner's jury blamed the crime on J. Blankenship, James D. Oglesby, Elisha Green, and Tom Russell. The same men also beat and mistreated other African Americans in the neighborhood of Woodstock and Greenpond. When the men were arrested Solicitor J. Fritz Thompson got on the phone and told Judge Miller. Miller ordered the grand jury to assemble in Centreville on Monday to investigate the case. The officers of the county are busy getting witnesses and members of the grand jury. There was "considerable excitement" in the neighborhood over the killing of McMillan.
