Former Deputy Sheriff Cleared In Negro Death. Montgomery, Ala.- A former deputy sheriff put on trial in the death of Negro he arrested, was acquitted on charge of violating the civil rights of his prisoner. The verdict was returned by a jury consisting of one Negro and 11 white persons. Harvy King Conner testified in federal court that he used only enough force to protect himself while arresting James Earl Motley for "highway intoxication" last Nov. 20. Conner said he struck Motley twice with a flat leather thong known as a slapjack when Motley supposedly grabbed his shirt collar and refused to let go. His testimony contradicted that of two Alabama state troopers, who said the ex-deputy continued to beat Motley after he fell to the ground under Conner's blows.
