Transcript: TRAGEDY AT WOODSTOCK. Prominent Merchant Shot and Killed by a Negro Tenant. Birmingham, Ala., April 21.- A desperate shooting affray occurred at Woodstock, 30 miles below here, in Bibb county, between John Herring and his brother Pink, prominent merchants, on one side and Taylor Collins, a negro, on the other. Collins owed the Herrings for the rent of a house and was about to move out his house hold goods when the Herrings came up. A quarrel ensued and all drew weapons. John Herring was shot in the neck and died in 5 minutes. Collins was shot in the chin and shoulder seriously. A large crowd of whites and blacks gathered quickly and for some minutes it was believed a race war would occur. Jusice Pendleton succeeded in quieting the sides, though reports from the scene are to the effect that a conflict is not improbable.
