On September 24, 1933, Dennis Cross, 50 years old, was lynched in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, near the country club. He was lynched by a white mob disguised as police officers after being accused of accosting a white woman. The mob dragged Cross, who was paraplegic, out of his home and shot him. Cross was a widowed farm laborer and the son of Dennis Cross Sr. and Jane Rhoden.
