- On the night of the 23d ult., a negro (mark it, " Governorl") named Seott. Gould was killed Romulus; in this county, under the following circumstances It seems that two parties of ne- groes had been in the habif; every Sathrday night, of meeting at à cer- tain point, and engaging in high words, the one: against the other. Several negroes thus habithally met; On the occäsion above named a-big .quarrel was begun. Some of the negroes had gone there armed. Whilst the muss was at its height, a gunavas dis charged, mortally mounding said Scott Gould, who, by the way, was a drunken and characterless fellow The negroes report that some white men rushed upon them on horseback; and shot the man Gould: They de- clare they Inew neither thê men or horses that came tupon them. The well founded belief is, that Gould was killed by those with whom he was quarreling, and that tliese made up the " cook and bull (story, implicat; ing ulknown white ment 1. Strange that none of the ment or hörses could be identified ! There was no evidence saye that afforded by negroes only the white men living in the "icinity say, that the negroes were unusually loud and profanê in their quarrel on the occasion. Sheriff Pegues and oth- ers répaired to the spot on Monday, bnt were funaple to find out any thing as to the source whence Scott Gould received his death wound. Now that the " Governor? and) his emissaries have given the whités of Tuskaloosa suchr à bad name, it is very probable that negroes will kill each other, with the. fair presumption that their evil deeds will be "laid at the doors of entirely innocent white people. All that is now necessary. for a fnegro murderer to clear. his(skirts of suspic ion; is to concoct a big,story of a view had by him of certain white 4 some- bodies in disguise, shooting at his brother negro.
