- Circuses, with their attendant evils, rarely ever visit . community without leaving their baleful effects behind. We did not escape, but we have to chronicle a very unfortunate affair. The evidence is stated from several standpoints, and for fear we might do some one is- justice we give only the mere facts: Sam McGee, . white man, shot a negro, named Bill Thomas several times with a pistol. It is said that both parties were somewhat intoxicated, or the difficulty might not have occurred As soon as McGee did the shooting he was assailed by a crowd of colored men, who were crying "kill him", and if it had not been for the heroic conduct of several of our prominent citizens, aided by Hortentius Williams, Neil Garland and others, harm would have come to him. An attempt was made to assault him even after the Sheriff had taken him in hand, McGee was safely jailed, and from latest accounts, Thomas was improving.
