- WM. B. POPE, of Columbus, was shot and dangerously wounded by a negro named Lewis Austin, at Alta, Ala., on the 29th ult. In walking through the cars Mr. Pope was jostled by the impudent negro, and when spoken to about it made an insulting reply, and attempted to strike Pope with a pair of brass- knucks, but was provented by bystanders. As Mr. Pope got out of the cars at Alta the negro shot him twice, and took to his heels. He was followed by a crowd of citizens, captured and hung.-Brandon Republican.
