A tragedy occured yesterday on Greensboro road, near Big Sandy bridge, growing out of an attempt of an officer to arrest a negro known s General Naugher. Naugher was wanted by the authorities on two charges, and yesterday word was received here that he was in the Big Sandy neighborhood. Deputy Sheriff Kyle being busy in court and unable to go himself sent H. W. Haney and John Nahors to make the arrest. They met the man riding a horse, in the neighborhood already indicated, and Mr. Hanev, descending from his buggy laid his hand upon the negro's and told him to consider himself under arrest. The negro jumped from his horse and attacked the officer, who struck him with a pair of handcuffs. The negro continued the attack when Haney drew his pistol and- struck him with it. The negro then threw the officer heavily to the ground and running his hand into his clothing drew a weapon of some kind (we were unable to learn what) and drawing back his arm prepared to strike the officer, who was still lying on the ground. Haney then opened fire, shooting the negro twice-- once in the side and once in the head, killing him instantly. Haney's back was so badly hurt that he had to be assisted in the buggy by his companion. He thought he was cut, but this was not the case, his back simply being strained. He came to town, told what he had done and gave himself up to the sheriff.
