Dave and Jerry Brown, ne-roes, brothers, were found by lumber haulers in the road about a mile from Elrod this morning dead. Both had been shot. One had been run over by an automobile. It was believed that the shooting took place about 8 o'clock last night, for it was at that time that residents of the community heard shots.
Notified of the find this morning, Chief Deputy Sheriff W. I. Huff, Deputy Sheriff Louis King and Coroner S. T. Hardin left Tuscaloosa at about 9:30 o'clock this morning to make an investigation of the killing, and word from Elrod over long distance at 2 o'clock this afternoon said the officers were on their way back to Tuscaloosa with two white men, one of whom admitted the shooting. The cause of the shooting had not been learned at Elrod.
The position of the two bodies, about 100 feet apart in the road, and the car tracks at that point, indicated that the two brothers had been shot by a man or men in an automobile which apparently was between the two. Leaving the place in a hurry, it is believed that the wheels of the car passed over one of the negroes who lay in the road in such a way that it would have been necessary to move the body in order for the car to avoid striking it.
The officers arrived in Tuscaloosa shortlly after 2 o'clock this afternoon with Earnest Elledge, a young white man who is a resident of the Elrod community, who had made the statement to them that he had done the killing. He was preparing, it is said, to come to Tuscaloosa and surrender. He made no statement to the officers, however, as to why he had killed the negroes, or any of the circumstances of the killing.
