Felix Thomas, negro, shot at the mine at Fleetwood early yesterday morning by Daniel Hayes, white boy 19 years of age, when a dispute arose as to who should possess a job the negro had left the first of the week, died at the Druid City hospital here last night. The negro was not thought dangerously injured when first examined at the mine, but he was rushed to the hospital here and it developed that the shot, striking him in the left side, penetrated his intestines. The shot was fired from a 110-guage shotgun, and the charge was of squirrel shot. The distance was not more than about 12 feet between the two men, the white boy charging that he fired as the negro was advancing upon him. Hayes was taken in charge yesterday morning following the shooting by Chief Deputy Sheriff Foster King and Deputy Sheriff Bela Hughes. He was held in the county jail here pending the outcome of the shooting and remains there today.
