Tuscaloosa, Ala., May 24 (AP). - A negro charged with attacking a white woman and who narrowly escaped lynching by a mob last August, tonight was free and was believed to have left Alabama. The Negro, Elmore ("Honey") Clarke, severely wounded by a mob that killed two Negroes held with him was released form the Montgomery county jal yesterday after Judge Henry B. Foster in Tuscaloosa circuit court had entered an order dismissing an indictment charging first-degree murder and attack. Clarke had been held in the Montgomery jail for safekeeping since he appeared here several weeks ago after the attempted lynching to testify before a grand jury investigating the case. He had steadfastly denied any connection with the case, and District Solicitor Edward Degraffenreid in entering the motion to dismiss the charge, said the onnly two witnesses to connect him with the case, Dan Pippen., and A.T. Harden, victims of the mob were dead.
