- Rifle Discharges As Attorney General Directs Probe. Tuscaloosa, Ala., Sept. 6.- (AO)- An automatic rifle accidentally discharged in the Tuscaloosa county courthouse today, wounded Attorney General Thomas E. Knight, Jr., who is directing the lynch probe here, and Deputy Sheriff Bish Gilbert, of Jefferson county. One bullet passed through Attorney General Knight's right ankle and struck Gilbert's left foot. Neither was hurt seriously. The riffle, lying in the floor outside the grand jury room was accidentally discharged when some one stumbled over the weapon. Deputy Gilbert was one of the dozen Birmingham officers accompanying Elmore Clark, wounded negro, who was testifying before the grand jury at the time of the shooting.
