- ANOTHER CASE TWO NEGROES RUSHED HERI FROM WETEMPKA LAST NIGHT. They Were Charged with Attempte Assault on a Young Lady and I is Said That They Were to Hav Been Lynched Last Night Deputy Sheriff's Brought Theu Here for Safe Keeping, Again last night the Lower We tumpka Road was the scene of a fas drive by four men from Wetumpka t the county jail here on Washington Street Two of the men were deputy sheriffs and the other two were negroes accused of asault. The two negroes Melbie Smith and Willie Floyd, are said to have attempted an outrage or the person of a daughter of Mr. John ston, a Baptist minster near Wetump ka. They entered the young lady's room. so the story goes, but she scared them off by screaming. They were ar- rested and put in jail at Wetumpka but on hearing that they were to b lynched last night Sheriff McCoy had a couple of deputies bring them to the jail here as fast as two horses could travel over the road. One of the ne groes, it is said, admits going in Miss Johnston's room. Two other negroes were removed from the Wetumpka jail last night to the penitentiary for safe keeping. They Were charged with murdering a white man a few nights ago and plans were made. it is said, to lynch them last night. It is not known whether they reached the walls or not.
