- SERIOUS TRAGEDY OCCURS IN FLMORE Two Dead as Result of Negro RunNINg Into Vehicle Driven by Girls. Wetumpka, Nov. 10.-(Special) -A serious tragedy occurred to- day near Floyd, Elmore county, about twelve miles east of Wetumpka, when Claude Kidd, white, was killed by a negro who ran into two young ladies while driving to church. The negro was later killed by infuriated citizens. The two daughters of John Chrisitzberg started to church this morning, and on their way met two negroes in the road driving a buggy. The young ladies gave as much of the public high- way as they could, but in passing the rear wheel of the buggy be- came locked. The horse driven by the young ladies became frightened and in his fright broke the harness. About this time some young men came up, fixed the harness and accompanied the young ladies to the church after which they left to over take the negroes, some of them going for the father of the young ladies. Mr. Chrisitzberg became very indignant and overtaking the negroes attempted to horsewhip them when one of the negroes drew a pistol, shooting Mr. Chrisitzberg through the body, injuring him seriously, if not fatally. The two negroes after the shooting deserted their buggy and took to the woods. The penitentiary dogs were secured and placed upon the tracks of the fleeing negroes about nine miles from where Mr. Chrisitzberg was shot, and a large number of citizens joined in the man hunt. The occupants of a cabin which was soon reached stated. that the parties sought were not there, but beliveing the negroes to be secreted about the hut some of the party went inside. Once inside the cabin a loft was noticed over- head, whereupon Claud Kidd, one of the pursuers, mounted a rickety table and with a pole pushed up one of the planks of the loft. As he did so, a pistol shot from the loft rang out and Mr. Kidd fell to the table dead, the ball striking him in the top of the head, coming out under the lower jaw. The negro who killed Mr. Kidd was told to come out, but when he refused the crowd proceeded to set fire to the cabin. The negro seeing he would be burned made a dash for liberty, shooting at the crowd as he ran, shooting five times, though fortunately no one was struck. The negro was killed by the posse and his body completely riddled with bullets.
