- Murder and Arson. Wetumpka, June 15.—The most heinous crime that was ever committed in Elmore county was enacted last night. Just seven miles north of Wetumpka lived Mr. W. Carden and wife, an old couple between the ages of 60 and 70 years, and Mr. Wm. Curlie also an old person and a kinsman of Mrs. Carden. Last night between 9 and 10 o'clock the residence of Mr. Carden was discovered to be on fire and by the time the nearest white neighbor reached the premises the roof of the building was falling in and the occupants were no where to be seen, but after the fire had spent its fury the charred remains of the three victims of a supposed robbery and murder, was found amongst the smouldering ruin. It was a universally known fact that Mr. Carden had several thousand dollars in gold about his premises and last night's tragedy no doubt grew out of that fact as circumstances point to a brutal crime of robbery and murder. Suspicion rests upon five negroes that are now under arrest. The victims were honest, upright and highly respected citizens. Wetumpka, Ala., June 16.—A mob of 400 angry farmers took five negro prisoners from the county jail here tonight and made off into a remote section of the county with them.
