- First on Record. The public, at least that portion of it that believe in human rights being protected will read with delight that in our southland, where all good must emenate, comes the news from Montgomery. Ala., that the first case on record where lynchers met their just deserts. The supreme court of Alabama affirms the decision of the circuit court, and Joseph and John must go up. So good so far. Let the good work go on. There is yet a God in Israel. Montgomery, Ala, April 6. The case of the State vs. Josephus Jowers and John Edwards from the circuit court of Elmore county, was affirmed by the supreme court today. This is the case in which the defendants and six or eight other white men went to the house of a defenseless negro in Elmore county at midnight last year, and, taking him into the woods, whipped him unmercifully, and finally shot and killed him, for some trifling offense. Sentence of ten years each was passed.
