- CURRENT EVENTS IN ALABAMA. TROUBLE NEAR CUSSETA. Fight in Which Several Persons Were, Wounded Grew Out of Politics. Saturday night a desperate fight, brought on by politics, nearly precipitated a race war near Cusseta. Friday the democrats held a meeting near Cusseta, and their orators divided, time with the populists. Saturday night the populists held a meeting, and reports say refused to divide time with the democrats. Thereupon the democrats withdrew and started up a separate speaking, and in the midst of these movements some one shot at a Mr. Mitchell and wounded his horse. He left at once for Cusseta and swore out warrants for the parties and returned. When he again reached the scene his posse was fired into, and they returned the fire, and a desperate fight ensued. After the fight was over it was found that the following whites were seriously wounded: W. J. Busbee, W. W. Meadows. Also the following negroes: John Hull, Will Floyd, Tom Combs, Charles Morgan. A report says that the negroes were arming and gathering for the purpose of wiping out the white race. Forty men, armed to the teeth, left Opelika for the scene. When they got there they found white men pouring in from all the surrounding country. Lafayette furnished about seventy-five white men, and West Point sent as many more. A number of the instigators have been arrested, but the ringleaders escaped.
