- ANOTHER CASE TWO NEGROES RUSHED HERE FROM WETUMPKA LAST NIGHT. They Were Charged with Attempted Assault on a Young Lady and It is Said That They Were to Have Been Lynched Last Night—Deputy Sheriff's Brought Them Here for Safe Keeping. Again last night the Lower Wetumpka Road was the scene of a fast drive by four men from Wetumpka to the county jail here on Washington Street Two of the men were deputy sheriffs and the other two were negroes accused of assault. The two negroes, Melbie Smith and Willie Floyd, are said to have attempted an outrage on the person of a daughter of Mr. Johnston, a Baptist minster near Wetumpka. They entered the young lady's room, so the story goes, but she scared them off by screaming. They were arrested and put in jail at Wetumpka but on hearing that they were to be lynched last night Sheriff McCoy had a couple of deputies bring them to the jail here as fast as two horses could travel over the road. One of the negroes, it is said, admits going in Miss Johnston's room. Two other negroes were removed from the Wetumpka jail last night to the penitentiary for safe keeping. They were charged with murdering a white man a few nights ago and plans were made, it is said, to lynch them last night. It is not known whether they reached the walls or not.
