- ALLEGED LYNCHERS Of Robert White Plead Innocence. Testimony of Fuller and Strength. Special to the Birmingham News. Wetumpka, A.m., Aug. 30.-The investigation of the lynching of the negro Robert White, which occurred in this county several weeks ago, is being vigorously prosecuted, and the alleged lynchers several of whom have been indicted, are making every effort to clear themselves of the charges brought against them. John Strength and Martin Fuller were on trial yesterday. The former when put on the stand testified that on the morning preceding the lynching he was at Thomas' store, where Robert White was under arrest pending his removal to jail here. There was a crowd of other men there, Fuller said all of whom left the place when the officers started with the negro on the trip to Wetumpka. When the others left the store the men, Fuller said, went to hunt for White's brother, who up to that time had not been apprehended. The crowd separated, all going in different directions. Fuller and a Mr. Still, who is now in jail here charged with complicity in the lynching, went toward Wetumpka, and when they reached Lazenbys ford, saw the hack in which the officers had the prisoner surrounded by a crowd of men. Fuller declared that he did not remain in that place, but immediately turned aside, and, coming out in a settlement near the road. pursued his way home. He stated that he recognized several of the men in the crowd surrounding the hack, and when requested to name them. gave the names of those against whom indictments have been found, but who left the county before they could be arrested. John Strength was also put on the stand, and testified that he had nothing to do with the lynching, declaring his innocence in the strongest manner.
