- Prisoner's Death Still A Mystery WETUMPKA, Ala. (UPI)-Investigation into the mysterious death of a Negro county jail prisoner remained cloaked in secrecy Wednesday night as a coroner's hearing adjourned for the holiday. There were indications criminal charges may be filed. Hearings may resume Friday if witnesses can be summoned. The body of James Earl Motley, 27. was taken from his jail cell only hours after he had been arrested by Elmore County deputy Sheriff Harvey Conner Sunday. Other Negroes with Motley at the time of his arrest said Conner savagely beat the man they all knew as "Bronco." Dr. Joseph R. Benson. Elmore County coroner, held the day-long inquest behind locked doors and refused all information to news media. He said only that his findings would be given to District Attorney U. G. Jones.
