Last Wednesday night an unknown negro went to the house of a Mr. Crawford, near Brockton Mines, 30 miles from the city of Birmingham, and finding Mrs. Crawford alone he made a desperate attempt to outrage her. After a desperate struggle, the lady’s cries frightened her assailant away and brought help. The lady was badly hurt in the struggle, and a large crowd of men were soon in pursuit of the negro. He was caught near the house and fully identified by Mrs. Crawford; with one accord and without a word the captors started for the woods near by with their prisoner and in less than three hours from the time the outrage was attempted, the negro was hanging from the limb of a tre dead. He was identified by the lady, and his clothes was torn in the struggle, and time was given him for prayers- no confession. A rope was placed around his neck, his hands tied and he was then strung up to a limb and left hanging there. No one even asked the negro his name.
