"Birmingham, June 3.- An unknown negro attempted to outrage Mrs. Crawford at Blocton last night. He was pursued and captured a short distance from the house. When fully identified by the woman, he was taken to the woods nearby and hung to the limb of a tree.
And this was all there was of it. The Birmingham riot, the tread of armed men, the flow of patrician blood in defense of law all that, had vanished and the reporter turned in with his prize, the vulgar and savage murder by a mob of an unknown negro near Blocton.
