- Alex was hung on August 4 for the murder of Mrs. Hester Hubbard. No crime in the history of Bibb county has like this one. The fact that Alex was caught outside of Bibb County saved his life. Alex owed Hubbard $5 and Hubbard wanted him to work it off. Hubbard basically kidnaps Alex and makes him work, but he works half a day and leaves. Two days later he comes back with his brother, Will Hill. Will Hill was guilty because he was there and even though he didn’t fire a shot, he participated. Three days later Will Hill was captured in a cabin, ten miles from the incident. They took him back to the Hubbard’s for identification. He gave up his name, but denied being a part of the crime his brother committed and would not give up his whereabouts. The posse reached the Hubbard’s and heard the motherless baby cry. It made them even more mad. Hubbard confirmed his identity and it was determined his should be lynched. He was strung up and down, but still would not give up his brother’s location. Will was tied to a tree and Hubbard fired the first shot. Then more bullets rang out with him. Alex Hill states that he tried to pay back Hubbard, but he didn’t want it and went to throw a plow point at his so he fired. He fired a second time immediately after. He had the gun with him to go hunting. Will was on his way to Sid Lewis’ farm to get work. Alex said Will should not have been lynched because he did not take place in the crime.
