SAVED BY THE SHERIFF Negro Rapist at Birmingham After Extraordinary Efforts Lodged In Jail- Birmingham Ala Sept 8 —Frank Saffold the negro who assaulted Mrs. Sarah Scott a white widow In Bibb county on the night of the 2d instant whoes capture and confession was announced in The Commercial was brought to this city tonight by Sheriff Latham. It was only by the most extraordinary efforts on the part of the sheriff that he evaded a powerful mob of angry citizens who were bent on lynching him. He owes his lease on life to the sheriff and is thankful so he savs that he can live a while longer as he knows he must pay the death penalty.
