- Dixie Negro's Death In Jail To Be Probed (Special To The DAILY DEFENDER) WETUMPKA, Ala. - The Elmore county coroner's of- fice said an autopsy is planned on the body of a 23-year-old Negro, who died in a county jail cell with his clothes re- portedly "covered with blood." However, sheriff Lester Hol- ley said the prisoner, James Earl Motley, had not been beaten while in the jail. Holley, who said he was out of town at the time of Motley's death, said he didn't know whether the prisoner had been beaten outside of the jail. Some of Motley's companions at the time of his arrest have been quoted as saying he was beaten by a deputy sheriff before being jailed.
