- The Motley Case, A state autopsy report has has confirmed what, everybody suspected, that James Earl Motley, who was, taken dead from a Wetumpka, Ala., jail two weeks ago,, died of severe head injuries. He had been beaten by a, white deputy sheriff who said that Motley was driving, while intoxicated and that he resisted arrest., "The autopsy report showed that Motley had less, alcohol in his blood than the Alabama Highway Patrol, considers necessary to justify a charge of driving while, intoxicated. The report also revealed that Motley had, not been driving., The Alabama Journal Montgomery, which has, editorially accused the investigating officials of "a, conspiracy of silence" on the case, reported that it had, found three white men who had witnessed various, parts of the Motley episode. One of them confirmed the, accounts of the unjustifiable beating. So far, no arrest, has been made. The officials continue to be closemouth-, ed on their investigations and plans., Motley's bloody corpse was removed from the, County Jail before daybreak and a state toxicologist, performed an autopsy at once - before the man's, family had been notified. One thing is certain: Alabama "justice" will see to it that the guilty highway, patrolman receive no punishment for this dastardly, crime. For, after all, Motley was a Negro.
