- Biography
- On June 2, 1901, Abram White, 30, escaped lynching in Tallassee, Alabama. He was born in Alabama and lived in a house near his parents and Robin White Jr., an extended family member. He married Lena Russell White in 1897, and the two lived with their three-year-old son Henry White. The Whites also lived with two servants, Ely and Milton Hadley, who helped as farm laborers. The group likely worked as an extended family unit on farmland rented by Abram’s father. Robert White Jr. and Abram were accused of attempting to shoot a white farmer, and a lynch mob killed Robert in Tallassee. Abram was sent to court and convicted of assault. A mob member convicted of lynching Robert attempted to kill Abram in prison, and Abram likely had to flee Tallassee after he was pardoned a year into his sentence. Lena had another child after Abram’s arrest, and inmate records indicate that she died while Abram was imprisoned.
