- Biography
- Jake Floyd Born February 7, 1896 – Died unknown Eclectic, Alabama On approximately October 2, 1900, Jake Floyd, at the age of 28 was nearly lynched in Eclectic, Alabama by a crowd of white men after being accused of assaulting a white woman. Like with his brother Frank Floyd, he was arrested and taken to jail in Montgomery for his alleged crimes. Jake was a farmer and lived on Warehouse Street in the West Ward, same as his brother. He had a wife named Jocie (Josie, Jasie Hurt) Floyd and many children; Willie, Macon (Mason), Minnie, Virgin (Bergie), Lovie (Lonie, Louie), John (Johnnie), Artie (Ottie), and Pearl. Growing up, Jake lived with his parents Jacob and Malinda Floyd. He also lived with his siblings Simon, Jo, Green, Frank, Larkey, Vic, and Cludius. A death certificate for his son John (Johnnie) shows that he died at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Covington Kentucky, but it is unclear where his father Jake passed. I would also be curious to know where his children all went once they were of age to get married and support themselves. Did they all keep in touch and did he have relationships with all of his children until he died. I would also want to know if he outlived any of his children. The recorded date on John’s death certificate is November 18, 1947. The certificate does not indicate whether or not his parents listed were deceased at the time or not. At the age of 29, Willie Floyd was living with wife Ludie Floyd on a rented property along with their daughter Herietta, and son Ocie. He also was living with five of his sisters, a brother, and his newborn niece Irene Crosby. At the age of 39 he was living in Canton, Stark, Ohio, with his wife, two children, and mother in law Daisy Jeffer. In 1920, Macon Floyd was about 32 living with his wife Octavia Floyd, and four sons; Adolph, Reese, Macon (Jr., II), and MC Floyd in a house that they owned in West Wetumpka. Ten years later, Macon (Mason), his wife Octavia, and children Adolph and Mason C moved to Precinct 52 in Jefferson, Alabama. Lovie Floyd was married May 7, 1917 to George Austin. At the age of 26, she lived in Wetumpka, Alabama working as a laundress in the household of George Carey (Adopted father/ grandfather) and his family. She had a daughter, Flora Austin, who died and was buried in Paris, Kentucky, February 22, 1925. Johnnie Floyd lived a period of his life in the military. June 15, 1918 he departed from New York with the 92nd Infantry division. The following year he was on the Aquitania ship and left from Brest, France on February 22, 1919. In 1942, he entered the draft into World War II at the age of 46 and his next of kin was his sister, Lovie Austin (Auston). Pearl Floyd got married at the age 29, October 2 1930, to Wyart Minter in Jefferson, Alabama.
