Transcript

"In his will, Brown bequeaths his wife Eliza $5,000; a sixth of his slaves, including six specific individuals that he purchased from her father Bolling Hall; his house and a sixth of his plantation; and the slave Betsey, his seamstress. If his wife should remarry, she will be paid for the property, which will be passed to Brown's children. To each of his four sons, he bequeaths a sixth of his slaves, a sixth of his plantation, and a fifth of his money. He leaves the same amount to his daughter, Mary, but this is to be held in trust for her by his oldest son, John, to keep it ""free from hindrance or control of her husband and in no wise to be subject to the payment of any debt he may contract."" It seems that at the time the will was written, all five children were under the age of twenty-one. The will is undated; Thomas Brown, son-in-law of Bolling Hall, died after 28 April 1843 and before 11 July 1843."
