The Negroes of Green County, Alabama have been trying to bring about a race conflict, under the stimulation of incendiary harangues of a young white “cuss” named Cockrell, the son of the late SW Cockrell. This ignorant young scalawag is the henchman of Charles Hays, delegated by him, during his absence in Washington, to keep the fire of negro hatred for the white man sturred and aglow. On Saturday, the 5th inst., 700 negroes marches to Eutaw, with three wagons loaded with guns that had been provided for them by Hays, and led by the scalawag stripling above named, and by whom they had been advised to that threatening course. Their declared object was forcibly to take possession of the courthouse for the purpose of holding a mass meeting. Hearing of their menacing approach, the volunteer company, already organized in Eutaw, turned out, determined to resist the armed possession of the halls of justice, and resolved to capture and desire the ordnance wagons of the bullying black fiends. But unfortunately, some two of three of the old-lady-like citizens, whose sudden fears exceeded their valor, demonstrated in such a sandless gizzard manner that the brave boys desisted from all interference. The negroes under the scalawag stripling leader, entered the town and courthouse in trumphang defiant style. Emboldened by this uninterrupted success. We expect soon to hear of still more high handed conduct on the part of hays stable constituents. Forbearance, under such circumstances, is wretched policy to say naught of the disgrace cast upon the white community. Such audacious ventures should be billed in the bud, as a precautionary step against negro blood-thirstiness. The sooner Eutaw has a few first class funerals of tremulous old fogies who interfere with judicious plans of bolder, wiser and more discreet citizens, the better.
