- At the special election held in Sumter county, Alabama, in February 1873 to elect a Senator to: fill a vacancy in the Senate of Alabama, caused by the death of Senator GILMORE, there were two candidates for the office. One of these candidates was W.G. LITTLE, Jr., a white man, a distinguished and respected citizen of that county; and he was the candidate of the Democratic and Conservative party. The other candidate was GRANVILLE BENNETT. a negro, who could neither read nor write, and he was a candidate of the Republican party. This was one of the most important elections ever held in the State of Alabama. On its results depended on the balance of power between the two political parties, in the Senate of Alabama, each party put forth its full strength in this election. With such an issue and such candidates in the field, C. C. SHEETS, Congressman-at-Large of the Republican party and now a candidate for re-election put himself to the trouble and expense of going all the way to Sumter county to canvass and electioneer for the election of this negro G. BENNETT over W. G. LITTLE, JR. and he did go there and electioneer for that purpose. This man SHEETS is now asking the white men of North Alabama to vote for big re-election to Congress, and the Custom House and Post Office Radical to.
