- DONIE COOK IS LET OFF LIGHT. Given Fine of $200 for Shooting Deputy Sheriff Brewer Near Samantha. Donie Cook, a negro, was given a fine of $200 for shooting Deputy Sheriff J. E. Brewer, who attempted to serve a warrant on him near Samantha shortly after Christmas, in county court yesterday. It appeared from the evidence that the deputy went to the home of the negro and told him to come out, to which the negro responded in a gruff tone and told the deputy to tell him from where the was what he wanted to say. Then, it was stated, the negro reached for a gun and both fired almost simultaneously, only the negro's fire taking effect. Deputy Brewer was painfully wounded about the face, and later lost an eye as a result of the affair.
