- Summarily Dealt With. Birmingham, Al, July 13.-Near Coaling last night a posee of citizens went to the house of John Durrett, colored, and called him out. Durrett refused to obey and sprang out a window to flee. when the posse fired a volley at him. Durrett fell to the ground peppered with shot and bullets and fatally wounded. Without waiting to see the result of their shots the posse left. News from Coaling today was to the effect that Durrett is very low and will die. The shooting of Durrett is the outcome of the lynching of the negro, Robert Harris, which occurred near Coaling day before yesterday. Harris assaulted Mrs. Hodges, a white woman, and attempted to assault Miss Cobb, a 16-year-old white girl. He was run down by a posse, captured. identified by Miss Cobb and summarily swing up and riddled with bullets. The lynching caused many mutterings among the negro population, and Durrett was the leader of the element that was doing the loudest talking. Durrett has an unsavory reputation, and is said to have killed two men.
