- Tuscaloosa Surprised. Everyone here was greatly surprised to read in the Saturday evening Birmingham News that Sheriff Palmer had taken the negro, Frank Richardson, to Birmingham for safe keeping for fear a mob would lynch him. There was no talk whatever of a mob forming to lynch this negro after the governor had given him a reprieve of ninety days. Judge Foster said he was greatly surprised at the action of Sheriff Palmer in taking the negro to Birmingham, as it would give people an opportunity to say that Tuscaloosa county was not a law-abiding county.
