NEGRO IS KILLED BY ABERNANT MAN AVENGING INSULT
'Justifiable Homicide' Coroner's Verdict G. J. Montgomery, a negro taxi driver formerly of this city though his mother lives at Greensboro, was shot and killed at about dark at Abernant Friday by Joe Miller of Abernant after the negro, who was drinking, had invited Miller's wife to accompany him and two others, in an automobile ride to Birmingham. There was a white man, the negro man and a negro woman in the car which drove to the Miller home late Friday evening. The white man knew Miller and said he had a little business to transact there. When he found Mr. Miller absent he was leaving, he said. when the negro man-made the proposal that Mrs. Miller accompany them.
TELLS HUSBAND
When Mr. Miller returned to his home a little later Mrs. Miller told him the story. Taking: shotgun he found the negro in the highway office at Abernant and called to him to come outside. The negro refused, and re- received a charge from both barrels of the gun. An investigation by the coroner followed and the verdict was "justifiable homicide." Mr. Miller, who had surrendered to the sheriff's office here, was released on his own bond pending disposal of the case by the grand jury which meets here tomorrow.
