- Biography
- On November 12, 1912, Joe Burney, Age 29, was lynched in Floyd, AL, by a vicious mob after being accused of running two white women’s buggy off the road, and for being accused of what basically amounts to simply exercising his right to self-defense, after their father attempted to whip him. The mob gunned him down mercilessly. He had just recently gotten married to his long-time partner Burt Burney, ( also known as Bertha Burney), formerly Burt Green, in March of that year, and together she and him had one daughter, Katie, who was age 6 at the time of his passing. They most likely moved around a lot, with Katie being registered as being born in, and originally residing in Reform, in Pickens County, and being registered as a Reform resident as of 1910, showing he moved there with Burt, before they then moved back to Tallassee by 1912, as he and Burt were married in Tallassee. Joe Burney was raised on a farm in Tallassee in his teenage years that was rented by his step-father Potin Nolen, and was raised by Potin, along with his mother Molley Nolen. He was the second of eight siblings, with there being five boys and three girls in all. He was employed in public works, building roads for the government, alongside many of his brothers. He would posthumously become the grandfather to five granddaughters.
