- n the early morning hours of May 11, 1897, just before daybreak, both Mollie Smith and Mandy Franks were lynched in the small community of Jeff, located in Madison County, Alabama. Both women were black servants at the home of Joshua and Sally Kelly. The women were lynched for their alleged involvement in the poisoning of the Kelly family, which resulted in the death of Joshua Kelly.
