SWIFT JUSTICE. The Diabolical Act of a Negro Similarly Avenged. TUSCALOUSA, Ala., Aug., 1.-Tuesday morning a 13-year-old daughter of a well-known citizen, living just outside the town, came in to take a music lesson. On returning in the evening she was met in the road by Andy. Burke, a negro, who over- powered her and dragged her into a piece of woods. A gentleman passing along the road soon after heard her screams and started into the woods to investigate. When Burke saw him he re- leased the girl and fled. Parties of searchers captured him Thursday and hanged him to a tree. It is alleged that they first mutilated him in a horrible manner and took his scalp off. Becoming imbued with the spirit of torture they finally disemboweled the wretch and after stringing him up fired a volley of shots into him from their revolvers. The sufferings of the victim while being tortured were horrible and he begged piteously to be put out of his misery. The Governor will, it is said, investigate the matter at once.
