At Union, in Greene county, on Saturday. February 27th, a negro man named Nelse Harris had a preliminary examination before a Justice of the Peace on a charge of a rape committed upon a Mrs. Lock, a widow, which resulted in his being committed to jail in default of a $1,000 bail bond. The Constable D. R. McCraw having the negro in charge left him with a guard while he went to his supper and during his absence six or seven men rushed into the room where the guard was taking the negro carried him off about three and a half miles on the road distance leading into Clinton, when they got a short distance to the woods on the right of the road and murdered the negro by shooting him through the body three times and castrated him, after which they threw his body into Trussel's Creek. No arrests have yet been made.
