By a private letter we learn that the trial of the cause in the Perry Circuit Court, at Marion, of the State vs. Maglorie C. Perras, was closed on last Saturday. It will be remembered that Perras had an affray with a colored man, named Jordan Edwards, in February last, during which he first shot and then stabbed the latter three times. The State was ably represented by Rufus J. Reid, Solicitor, assisted by Col. John C. Reid, and the defense by Messrs. W. L. Bragg, W.B. Medawell and Jesse B. Shiver. The trial consumed six entire days. The case was given in charge of the jury about 5 p.m. on Saturday, who after a deliberation of about four hours returned a verdict of "guilty of murder in the second degree," whereupon the Court affixed the punishment at ten years' imprisonment in the State Penitentiary. The defense immediately took an appeal, to the Supreme Court, in consideration of which the execution of the sentence was suspended for sixty days after the commencement of said Court.
