A negro named Granville Nibblet stole a cow and some corn from Mr. O. R. Bell, a few miles south of this city on Sunday night. Mr. McRea, a beat magistrate, issued warrant for the arrest of Granville, and deputized two negroes, in the employ of Mr. Bell, to catch the thief. They over bauled the "loil pusson," on the edge of town on his way to market, with the dead cow and her hide on his wagon. Mr. Bell, came to town early in the morning, and requested constable D.C. Mitchell, of Fuller's Court, to go out and assist in the arrest of Granville, if it had not already been done. Granville was flanked, just as he entered Court street, the negro constables making their appearance, nearly as soon as Mitchell. Granville stoutly refused to surrender "any of his property" and leveled his pistol-a huge six shooter alternately at Mitchell and the negroes-refusing to hear the reading of the warrant of arrest, or drowning the same with curses. While Mr. Mitchell was trying to pacify him, he took dead aim at one of the negroes—fired, missed —and retreated. The negro pulled down with his gun, and covered Granville's back with blood and shot. He was not dead at last accounts.
