"Two freedmen named Henry Bell and Henry King, were arrested near Greensboro, last week, on the charges of the murder of the man Perry, which we mentioned. They were started to jail, at Marion, under guard, and while on the way, about half way to Marion, they were taken from the guard by an armed crowd of men, unknown to the guard, and hung.
We regret to hear of such lawlessness. If the negroes committed the murder, they should have been tried by a military commission, or a military court, and executed. This thing of mobs taking the lives of men in their own hands can lead to nothing short of anarchy. And the military should punish all who engage in it."
